" Trickster spirits are the ones that challenge transcendence and insist that everyone, absolutely everyone is involved in the evolution of life. Trickster spirits transgress the boundaries of deities and in this way they represent the transgressions of social and political boundaries as well.

As we shall see presently, the universe in general is conceived as having three levels--sky, earth, underworld--connected by central axis. The symbolism employed to express the interconnection and intercommunication among the three cosmic zones is quite complex and not without contraindictions. For it had a "history" and has been frequently contaminated and modified, in the course of time, by other more recent cosmological symbols. But the essential schema is always to be seen, even after the numerous influences to which it has been subjected; there are three cosmis regions, which can be succesively traversed BECAUSE they are linked together by a central axis.
